Usda Report, Ghana Cocoa Sector Overview
Ghana’s cocoa production for the 2024/25 marketing year is forecast at 700,000 metric tons, representing a 32 percent increase from the 531,000 metric tons recorded in 2023/24. The growth is attributed to improved yields from the early main crop harvest, more effective pruning, and the government’s expanded supply of insecticides to meet farm-level requirements. Despite this recovery, production remains below the 2021/22 peak of 1.04 million metric tons, with COCOBOD now targeting a more conservative figure of 650,000 metric tons to align with current weather and crop conditions. Cocoa remains vital to Ghana’s economy, supporting about 800,000 farm families across 10 regions and generating roughly USD2 billion in annual foreign exchange. Exports are projected to reach 520,000 metric tons, a 55 percent rise from the previous year’s estimate, supported by improved bean purchases and reduced cross-border smuggling. Cocoa continues to rank as Ghana’s third largest source of export earnings after gold and crude oil.
